Leaves of the Alocasia Regal Shields

How do you bring the jungle feeling into your home with the Alocasia Regal Shields?

Winter is almost over, which means we want to bring the sun back into the house. Our Eden Jungles plant line is the perfect composition of sunny plants with a tropical edge. Just like you're already on vacation. The Eden Jungles are characterized by their rough look as if they came straight from the jungle, and we love it! These plants are the perfect addition for an industrial look or a jungle feeling at home. The Eden Jungles include several golden oldies, such as the Monstera minima and Philodendron bipinnatifidum. But newcomers should also not be missing from this plant line. One of those newcomers is the Alocasia Regal Shields, a plant we would love to tell you more about!

Back to the roots

The Alocasia Regal Shields is a beautiful large plant with dark green leaves, light green stems, and white veins. It can be confused with its brother the Alocasia Wentii, but the visible difference between the two plants is the leaf shape and the different color of the veins! The Alocasia Regal Shields owes its name to the unique discoloration and shape of the leaf, which resembles a shield. The plant is originally from America, where it was developed by crossing in Florida. A tropical plant is known for its love of warm temperatures. When it is too cold for the plant (such as at an entrance, open window, or cold days outside) it lets its leaves hang. However, due to the habituation to the Florida climate, the Alocasia Regal Shields can take a beating and is reasonably wind resistant. The Alocasia Regal Shields belongs to the Arum family, and this plant family is characterized by their striking leaves and the inflorescence of the plant. Also, the Alocasia Regal Shields, because it grows towards the sun, and can therefore grow considerably. This plant distinguishes itself from its family by the unique lighter veins because this is the only Alocasia that has this! So really a unique plant in its family, how cool is that?

Taking care of the Alocasia Regal Shields

Coming back to the growth of the Alocasia Regal Shields, it can grow quite big. On average, the plant will grow to between 1.2 and 1.5 meters, but in the jungle or a greenhouse, it can certainly reach 2 meters… If that is not a real jungle plant. As mentioned above, the Alocasia Regal Shields grows towards the sun. That is why it is important to turn the plant regularly so that the plant does not grow in one direction. The Alocasia Regal Shields also likes spacious surroundings, preferably in a large hall, office space, or living room. In the summer, the plant can also be placed outside on the terrace or the balcony, because, as mentioned before, the Alocasia Regal Shields can withstand a blow from the wind. However, you will have to be careful with the colder nights.

The Alocasia Regal Shields only needs water once or twice a week, provided the plant is in a pot with the right potting soil. This also depends on the location, so keep a close eye on this. Although the Alocasia Regal Shields has a tropical look, the plant is intended for slightly colder weather conditions. But the Alocasia Regal Shields prefers to be in a room at room temperature.
